Your Braintree Dental Studio dentist may recommend a dental bridge if you are missing one or more teeth. If one or more of your teeth is missing, you may find that over time, the shape of your face and profile can change, along with your natural bite and this may affect your self-confidence.
Replacing missing teeth by literally ‘bridging’ the gap, this dental treatment is one option to help restore your function, improve your health and alleviate the pain that an incorrect bite can cause.
Made of porcelain, dental bridges are bonded in place by crowns attached to your natural teeth on either side of the space. During the treatment, your dentist will remove a little of the enamel from the supporting teeth, for the perfect fit for the dental bridge. Impressions of your mouth and gums will then be taken and sent to a dental laboratory for your custom-fit bridge to be made.
Once ready, your bridge will be fitted using a strong dental cement. Due to the way a bridge is secured, a dental bridge is only suitable if you have healthy teeth on either side of the gap to support the new bridge. Your appearance is one reason to consider replacing missing teeth. Another is that the gap left by a missing tooth can mean greater strain on the teeth at either side. A gap can also mean your ‘bite’ is affected, because the teeth next to the space can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth bite together. This can then lead to food getting packed into the gap, which causes both decay and gum disease.
This depends on the number of teeth missing and on where they are in the mouth. The condition of the other teeth also affects the decision.
There are two main ways to replace the missing teeth. The first is with a removable false tooth or teeth – a partial denture. The second is with a fixed bridge. A bridge is usually used where there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth.

You need to clean your dental bridge every day, to prevent problems such as bad breath and gum disease. You also have to clean under the false tooth every day. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to use a bridge needle or special floss, as a normal toothbrush cannot reach.
